My unusual papermaking process...

I make jewelry and art from handmade paper and metal.

The metal is dipped into a pulp of water and finely beaten fibers from a plant called abaca. The fibers cling to the metal and shrink as they dry, forming a paper skin, built up over successive dips.

I hand-dye the paper, and seal my jewelry with resin to make the pieces waterproof and durable. 

My handmade paper work is inspired by the beautiful oceans and forests and mountains and wetlands of the Pacific Northwest... tide pools, seeds, flowers, raindrops, birds, the curves of a river, ferns, leaves.....

About Me

My name is Melanie Brauner. I'm a metalsmith, papermaker, and artist. I studied book arts and metals at Oregon College of Art & Craft.

My papermaking and metalsmithing studio is in Everett, Washington, tucked at the back of the garden of my 1928 storybook cottage full of antiques, where I live with my bagpipe teacher husband, Kevin.

I make handmade paper jewelry and artwork, and I play traditional music on the fiddle and piano. I spend lots of time roaming through the beautiful Pacific Northwest landscape gathering inspiration for my work. 

Every month I mail a small handmade paper artwork and a letter about how it came to be, to the subscribers of my snail mail club, The Verso Studio Letters.
