Crankie Showcase at the Seattle Folklife Festival, June 2016
My husband Kevin Auld and I are a fiddle and bagpipes duo called Holler & Glen. We play a hybrid of Scottish and American Old Time music, that tells the story of Scottish immigrants in America. Their music blended with Irish, African, and other influences and styles, to become what we know as Old Time music. I made a crankie to tell the story of this musical evolution. A crankie is a scroll, turned inside a box, lit from behind to become a shadow play. Mine is made from cut and torn paper. Kevin and I played a set of tunes that follow along with the story of the crankie, beginning with Scotland and ending in America. We performed it at the 2016 Seattle Folklife Festival in the Center House Theater at Seattle Center.
